In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows us the evil of racism. Discuss.

To Kill a Mockingbird contains various evidence to support that racism is evil. The Chambers dictionary describes evil as; 'something which produces unhappiness or misfortune; harm; wickedness or depravity; victimisation; sin; illness, disease or curse'. Harper Lee creates this effect in many ways. The situation of Tom Robinson is the most obvious one. Tom is convicted of a crime he didn't do. He was charged with the rape of a girl and was found guilty simply because he was black and she was white. To Kill a Mockingbird contains many other examples of racism and the damage they created in society.

Mayella Ewell is a poor, uneducated young woman who is a victim and falsely accuses Tom. Her father was the criminal, not Tom Robinson. However, this does not stop her from accusing the wrong man and cre


ating a victim of racism. "That nigger yonder took advantage of me" page 207. This slang was common amongst the uneducated society of white people and the racism was as common as ever. Tom Robinson was found guilty not because his case wasn't stable, but because the jury was white and he was black. "all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women." Page 225.

The father of Mayella, Bob Ewell, had racism bring out the worst in him. The belief that the white race was superior to the black created a division in the community. Bob produces a personal grudge against Atticus Finch as he defends Tom in the case. "Mr Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he'd get him if it took him the rest of his life" page 239.
