poetry

In this essay I am comparing three poems that are about love; "Love is..."

by Adrian Henri and 'A Blade of Grass' by Brian Patten and 'Sonnet' by Elizabeth

Barrett Browning. 'Love Is...' is about the things that people do in a relationship

but in 'A Blade of Grass' I think the person who received the grass is not happy

with the relationship and wants something to show or prove their love but the

poet - Patten is quite happy with it. Maybe the person who received the grass is

feeling insecure and needs something to reassure herself.

Adrian Henri might not be happy receiving the grass as a present because

he says: 'Love is the presents in Christmas shops'. But in another way he might

be happy receiving the grass as a present because he likes the ordinary things in

love, not the expensive or posh things like when he says: 'Love is feeling cold in

the back of vans' This isn't glamorous but it is romantic.

'Love Is...' is about someone's opinion about love and what love means to

them and it is about lots of different things in love, but 'A Blade of Grass' is about

a big, important part in a relationship, not small, unimportant things like:'Love is

eating fish and chips on winter nights' which might not be expensive but it is fun

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways,

counts, not what you do because in 'A Blade of Grass' Patten says 'I say this

that love should not go wrong and that everything should be perfect.

paint stained hands' These things are simple and not very special but when you

think a blade of grass is going too far by saying it's the thought that counts

love someone, it doesn't matter, all that matters is being together, because you

important and she thinks that love should be when you share everything with the

This is saying that she loves him for everything he is, and everything he

does and she will accept him whatever he's like. Browning thinks that love is

something you need and should have, because she says: 'I love thee freely, as

This also hints that it can't be about God but other lines do, like:
