Dean Ray Koontz is a successful and well-known American author of the twentieth century. He is known commonly as the Master of Suspense. Koontz writes novels that take us into worlds filled with adventure and suspense, dealing with extraordinary topics such as technology, time travel, and serial killing. In his lifetime, he has produced over sixty novels under several pseudonyms. Ten of his books have made the New York Times hardcover bestseller list. To add to this achievement reached by only nine other writers, eleven of his books have risen to the number one position in paperback. Koontz’s style uses a lot of imagery as he creates a world of invasive mutability, alien mutations and fantasies. Most of his novels contain monstrous children or genetically altered animals with human characteristics. The “angelic qualities of children prove to be potential aliens beneath their human skin”. Wanting to bury a picture of his mother with his dad, Chris goes down to the morgue before the body is transferred to the funeral parlor. He stumbles upon strangers switching the body in the hearse for that of a murdered vagrant taken out of an unmarked panel truck, not wanting to welcome Chris, they turn on all the lights. Thus begins a remarkable adventure. Chris' journey leads him to a gun-toting mortician, a terrified priest, a deserted but not empty Army base, a police station! Eventually after several acts of injury and despair, Marty and his wife are able to defeat the all hated Alfie. With that, Marty and his wife realize how important it was for them to have unconditional love for each other and for their children. The threat of almost becoming separate forces them to become closer and teach their children the importance of love. In House of Thunder, Sally’s events were a blessing in disguise. Although the scientists put her through tremendous turmoil, she realized that love was not out of reach. Moreover, once she was able to reach it, she found all the glory within herself and others. Susan also realized that the way she grew up did not have to affect her current life. She no longer had to look at the past as horrible but as an experience; an experience to learn from and plan her future. She was then able to enjoy her life with the bad; not caring how people thought about her because she knew that she could love herself along with the love of Dr. McGee. The novel The House of Thunder is an older book written by Koontz uner the pseudonym Leigh Nichols. Sally Thorton, the main character of this thriller, is a young woman from California. She grew up in a home similar to Dean Koontz. Her father was an obsessive compulsive with a drinking problem and her mother was dormant, and never came out of her room until she needed drugs. Unlike Koontz who used books as an escape, Sally’s escape was school. Although she was not popular or had any friends, she found pleasure in being the smartest in the class and having the best grades. She always hoped that being valedictorian would make her parents notice her or accept her but sadly, they did not show up to her graduation. Heartbreaking, yes, but in college, she meets the one and only man whom showed her attention and appreciated her hard work; Jerry Stein. Tragicly, after eighteen months of dating, he is murdered in a college hazing. . Each character provides a life long lesson: to love and let yourself receive love despite of the problems one might go through.
