To be honest with you, I did not read much of anything when I was a child. My mom always told me old Japanese fables that had been passed down from generation to generation. I went to an international school when I was younger and cannot remember reading anything except from Phonics, to learn English. I do remember that there was one piece of children's literature that I fell in love with from the first sentence. It was called Island of the Blue Dolphins, by Scott O'Dell.
