1984
People sometimes don't hear the whole truth about things that the government is doing. George Orwell's novel 1984 is a futuristic book about how the government of Oceania controls its citizens. Orwell uses irony to highlight the theme of Appearance vs. Reality in his novel. He does this by describing the names of the ministries, the detrimental things the government does, and how the characters act completely opposite of how they really are. The names of the ministries seem to have a positive meaning, but they really don't. The Ministry of Truth really falsifies the real truth to suit what the Party likes. Winston works in this ministry, and that was his job. One of the things that was changed was at first they were at war with Eurasia and in alliance with Eastasia, but then it was changed to being at war with Eastasia and in alliance with Eurasia. (Pg. 31-32) The Ministry of Love was a place of torture. An exam
People puts up an act around other party members hiding the real side of them. Julia acts as a feminist and a part of the Jr. Anti-Sex League, but she really likes men and likes having sex. She admitted to Winston while they were in the woods together. "...scores of times...always with party members," said Julia. (Pg. 104) Mr. Charrington, the prole that rented the apartment to Winston is another example. He was really part of the Thought Police who gets Winston and Julia caught. (Pg. 183) O'Brien, the "main man" that setted up Winston, pretended to be on the same side as Winston and thinks about the same stuff as him. The reason that the characters act differently is because they want to either hide their true self, or to try to see the real side of others. The theme Appearance vs. Reality is showed by Orwell through the use of irony. Both the government and the characters do things to deceive other people. It all
