Literary Analysis: Getting Away With Murder
Literary Analysis: Getting Away With MurderGetting Away With Murder is a mystery/comedy play written by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth. These authors were extremely creative in their writing. They frequently used figurative language and foreshadowing, some funny and some suspenseful. They created tension, conflicts, and doubts between the characters throughout the play. The main plot, subplots, and all of the characters have one thing in common: murder! In the main plot, seven psychiatric patients met for a group therapy session headed by Dr. Conrad Bering. These characters were all similar in that they had all been the cause of another person's death. The members met for their group session Saturday evening and discovered that Dr. Bering had been murdered. The murderer had to be one of the seven characters because no one else could get onto that particular floor of the building. They were the only ones with the key. Already, the mood had been set for tension, conflict and doubt; everyone accused each other of being the murderer. There were several subplots, which all tied into the main plot. Again, each subject involved murder. Dr. Bering had decided to write a book about the seven deadly sins of greed, glut
became violent to go along with Martin's feelings. When several of the patients came into the room, there was a loud clap of thunder. Pamela Prideaux - pride - killed her husband to conceal from the Dorothea Lustig - lust - aborted three babies Vassili Laimorgos - gluttony - he is committing a long, slow suicide Gregory Reed - greed - caused the deaths of six workers This was an extremely creative and well-written play. With the use of foreshadowing, figurative language, and environment, the authors were able to create conflicts, tension, and fear. The humor broke the constant tension and allowed the reader to relax occasionally. The authors gave away personality traits through the use of puns in the character's names. Even though there were several subplots, it was not too confusing because they all tied into the one main theme of murder. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ J.R. Chisholm murdered a woman in Central Park. He talked to his father, Martin Chisholm, because he was scared that he would be caught and was hoping that his father would help keep him out of trouble. He also told his father that he was seeing Dr.Bering. Martin accidentally killed his son by giving him a sedative. Martin then went to talk to Dr. Bering to find out how much information J.R. had given the doctor. In his anger, Martin grabbed a statuette and beat the doctor to death. Was it a coincidence that he picked up the "anger" statuette? He went to the group session, posing as his son, the new guy no one has met. Later, the group noticed that the "anger" statuette was missing, found it in Martin's coat pocket and realized that Martin was the murderer. After their discovery, Martin murdered everyone else, and accidentally got h
