Teenage Pregnancy

Everyday the pitter-patter of infant feet echo throughout the streets of America, and almost 10% of the time following behind are their teenage mothers, still infantile themselves. Teenage Pregnancy is a very drastic problem for the US. The United States is the unfortunate leader of teen pregnancy and births in the western industrialized world. Each and every year nearly one million teenage girls become pregnant. 80% percent of these pregnancies are unintended and 79% of these pregnancies are to unmarried teens.

How to prevent teenage pregnancy has been a question for many years. Statistics have been running wild trying to keep up with the teenage generation. Since 1972 the overall pregnancy rate among teenage girls rose 23%, sticking this generation with status of the most teenage pregnancies and births. Teens often fail to realize that giving life to a newborn child is supposed to be a privilege. Many teens take having a baby as some sort of joke. They believe it will never happen to them but the reality is, every time you have sex there is a possibility that the sperm will find it's way to the egg. It doesn't matter what day of your cycle it is, or if he pulls out just in time, or even if you use a condom, there is always s

e linked its use with the development of breast cancer. In smokers, it may also increase the risk of heart attacks. "The Pill" is not cheap; it costs from $10 to $30 a month, plus doctors' fees. Women who are taking analgesics or antibiotics should NEVER take oral contraceptives, as those medications can interfere with "The Pill's effectiveness. All things considered, if today's abstinence programs were working, "The Pill" wouldn't be necessary, anyway.

Those of the many sexually active teenagers that actually do use forms of birth control are usually completely ignorant about the topic. They naively think they can totally avoid pregnancy and STDs by using various forms of contraceptives. However, while it does greatly decrease the chances of disease and unwanted pregnancy, birth control is not always dependable. Sometimes the term "safe sex" can be misleading because the only true safe sex, is not having sex at all. Condoms do leak and they do slip off. Not only that, but STDs and even HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, have been known to pass through condoms made of lambskin. Believe it or not, even "The Pill" isn't always foolproof. Although "The Pill" diminishes the chances of pregnancy, it does not offer any protection against STDs or AIDS. Other medical drawbacks include side effects such as minimal weight gain, nausea, hypertension, benign liver tumors, and an increased risk of blood clots and strokes. Recent studies hav!

"What happens to the majority of teenager mothers?" you ask. The road after birth can be a very rough and rocky one. The statistics show that a meager 1/3 of teenage mothers receive a high school diploma. While the other 66% have to drop out to support and go out into the adult world to support their child. Most of the time single teenage mothers on their own do not make enough money to support themselves and their baby
