odyssey

A detailed Summary of odyssey

Homer's view on human nature is depicted well in his characters. How a character is treated by the gods and seen by other characters, is insight to the way Homer views morale in human life.

A great example of a truly good character is Penelope. Penelope has many great personality traits in her character. Homer portrays her as a very strong woman with power equal to the power of Odyssieus, but obviously not so overbearing. She has, since Odysseius has been away, remained married to him. Despite the great length of time he has been gone. Penelope has also ruled his kingdom as well as protected the well-being of his son, Telemakhos. Penelope had the power to to be faithful to her husband and to steer clear of the suitors. In Homer's eyes she has behaved well, living her life the best she could. So, when Odysseus comes home to stay, Athena makes her look younger for him. That is how Homer rewards her.

The code of hospitality that Homer emphasizes is also a reflection of his views on human nature. The code was if a pers

and would not be where is now if it wasn't for the hospitality of strangers. Homer shows how his characters benefit from the hospitality of others. This shows how Homer bleives that just being hospitable toward another person can make a great difference in the outcome of a persons life.

Homer depicts evil in a person as well. In book I when the suitors arre eating he domonstrates their evil by saying, " Not till desire for food and drink had left them were they mindful of dance and song, that are the grace of feasting." The suitors are portryaed as savages and alomst like a wild animal. This how Homer shows that a character or many characters are eviland behaive badly. This is why they must die in the end. They have made a mocherey of Odysseus' home and Homer punishes them. Homer shows how if a person behaives badly, it can affect the lives of others, such as when the suitors are forcing Penelope to marry.
