By May of nineteen eighteen, after a successful short writing career in Kansas City, Hemingway thought necessary as a writer, to experience life, to be credible as a story writer. Regarding war and writing about it, Hemingway thought," It was one of the major subject and certainly one of the hardest to write truly of and those writers who had not seen it were always very jealous and tried to make it seem unimportant, or abnormal, or a disease as a subject, while, really , it was just something quite irreplaceable that they had missed." (Fenton 55.) Hemingway's best writing during high school was titled "Judgment of Manitou" which unlike other sixteen year old literature which usually had false starts, with characters appearing spontaneously and disappearing just as quickly. There were usually to early and to many climaxes in their stories, but Hemingway was far advanced in his ability, for his character development, its complexity of thought, and maturity. Other students noticed that he was far more well read than they because his subject matter made references in his stories. Hemingway attended Oak Park High School, an impressive school, who's graduates had very little trouble with entrance requirements of the fashionable colleges of the time, like Yale, Wellesley, Amherst, or Williams. "Residents of the town were likely to maintain, with justification, that four years at Oak Park High were the equivalent to two years of college," (Fenton 4.) The Mako shark with as much beauty and dignity as the marlin. It has no fear and makes a direct attack on the marlin. The shark with its jaws clicking and tail thrashing in the water. Santiago kills it with the only weapon he has, being a tiller. The mako along with the Galanos ate the meat away and Santiago was left with the skeleton.(Wylder 36). Hemingway centered his time there around the English department. The freshmen classes emphasized the fundamentals of language and intensive reading assignments. Reading was directed to the great literary achievements of the past. These included oral classroom reading of the Old Testament, and classics like Ivanhoe . "Outside reading was currant literature such as H.G. Wells, but popular literature was outlawed. Sophomore studies were pointed to a survey of American literature, the junior year was involved mostly with public speaking."(Fenton 6.) As a senior the emphasis returned to literature. The instruction in English was so complete that "one of Hemingway's classmates later found that an advanced English survey at the university of Chicago was a duplication of his high school course."(Fenton 6.) a Time magazine correspondent. In nineteen fifty, living in Venice, Across the River and into the Trees, appeared, but was met with negative criticism. The Old Man and the Sea, was published in nineteen fifty two. He received a Nobel Prize in nineteen fifty four. He fathered a total of three children, before his death in nineteen sixty one, by a self inflicted gun shot wound. The marlin is an eighteen foot catch. The strong over powering fish fights and tows the skiff for three days. On the last day the marlin makes its last surge and jumps clear out of the water. "The fish is unbelievably heavy and of great weight, and Santiago marvels at its size."(Wylder 35). Santiago spears the marlin and the sea is discolored with it's blood. Santiago ties the marlin to the side of the skiff and at that time Santiago and the marlin become one in nature. He shares his sorrow with the fish and talks to the fish as if they were brothers." The masterpiece is always maimed by the events that are subsequent to its creation."(Williams 47-48) ng, and reading. The stay in Michigan gave him all the material he needed to write many of the fifteen short stories, that formed the collection," In Our time , the collection which in nineteen twenty five brought him his first critical recognition,"(Fenton 72.) Man vs. nature is very important in the
