Highway deaths hold steady. The number of people who are dying on the highway is not changing. In 1998 the amount of people who are killed in car accidents are only two more than 1999. This leads me to believe that there is many faults in the way people handle themselves while on the road. The actual number of deaths on the highway for 1999 is 43,986. The relatives of nearly forty-five thousand people are either called, or visited by the highway patrol of their state and are given the news of their loved-ones death. When looking at the statistics and then looking at the way I see people driving on the highway, it is not hard to see why so many people die.

The number one factor that causes so many accidents is road rage. It is estimated that between 1990 and 1999 that there was a 60 percent increase in the number of people who drive aggressively. A poll, taken in August of 1999, found that Americans believe 74 percent of the people they see driving, are more aggressive than they were five years ago. In Whittier, California a clinical psychologist by the name of Arnold Nerenberg has been quoted as saying "This competitiveness on the road is similar to what you see in all social mammals." It has been reported by the California Highway Patrol that a main concern for them are the big rig trucks that get in accidents. California is number one in the country with 80 professional truck driver deaths a year. California is number two in the country when 428 people died in large truck crashes. An average of 1.1 persons lose their life a day in California in large truck crashes. I understand that truck drivers are pushed by their bosses and paid by the mile and for the mile. Which is why I believe there should be some kind of law made that the big trucking companies leave more time for truckers to get their load to where it needs to be. They work long hours and are mostly underpaid. The pay factor leads truck drivers to drive fast, dangerously, and fatigued. Last year the trucking companies installed tracking devices on the trucks to make sure that the truckers weren't getting off track and going somewhere else.
