Living on a diverse planet, we are subjected to people of different race, sex, religion and political view. Everyone is different and unique which makes respecting diversity an important issue in today's society. Unfortunately, it seems as if the world has turned a blind eye towards this issue. Everyday there are countless acts of racism, sexism, and religious persecution being committed. Simple hate crimes from fights and slurs to extreme wars and riots are fought with many lives lost because difference in looks. Though I myself have not experienced harsh words or actions towards me about these things, I have noticed a growing trend of disrespect for diversity in the media. The public has somehow grown lenient to showing disrespect for diversity. Every time I turn on the television, I always hear some type of racial, sexual or religious comment that is offensive. While I am not offended myself, there are many people who take it to heart. I have never been directly involved in any type of discrimination towards any type of culture, nor have I been the victim of any harsh remarks about my race. Many of the remarks I hear are usually made as a joke. I think that watching the programs on television have distinguished in my mind the difference between a joke and a derogatory comment.
