An estimated 10% of all sexually active women in the United States are infected with this disease; rates among men are almost similar. Symptoms may be minimal or absent entirely. When they do show up, it will be 7-21 days after having sex. Most women and some men have no symptoms. Women bear the greater burden because of possible complications and consequences of the disease. Syphilis, also called syph or The Pox is caused by a spirochete bacterium called Treponema pallidum. It requires warmth and moisture to survive and dies very quickly outside the human body. The disease is usually acquired through sexual contact, although infected pregnant women can transmit to the fetus. The bacterium passes through any break or opening in the skin or mucus membranes and can be transmitted by kissing, vaginal or anal intercourse, or oral-genital contact. Sores or lesions known as chancres characterize syphilis. When left untreated a person can remain contagious for as long as 18 months. Syphilis passes through various stages that vary in length. During the 1st stage, which is 10-90 days after contact with an affected partner, painless, reddish brown sore on the mouth or nose appear. These sores lasts 4 - 8 weeks in untreated individuals. After sores heal, you still have Syphilis. When the 2nd Stage starts symptoms show up 6 weeks to 6 months after havi! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ng sex. When left untreated, Syphilis can cause central nervous system deterioration, heart disease, brain damage, blindness and/or death.
