The Crucible
In Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, a fear of witchery grows to the hysteria level. Arthur Miller bases his play entitled The Crucible on these events with John Proctor as the major character. Proctor's internal and external conflicts cause him pain and grief throughout the play. During the play, Proctor experiences problems with Abigail, Elizabeth, himself, and the community. Proctor's issue with Abigail stems from their affair while John's problems with his wife, Elizabeth, stem from John's affair with Abigail and the accusation of Elizabeth being a witch. In addition, John struggles with morals, loyalty, pride, and survival issues that stress him throughout the play. Finally, Proctor's conflicts with the community of Salem stem from the issue within himself, with his wife, and with Abigail. In the beginning of the play, Abigail works in the Proctor home. Eventually, Elizabeth finds out about Abigail and John's adulteress affair they have while Abigail is a Proctor employee.
John struggles with his own morals, loyalty, pride, and survival issues. He must decide whether to ruin his life with his wife or to let his wife die and keep the love affair with Abigail alive. Everyone will have to deal with the decision he makes. If he decides to tell the truth, he hurts himself and Abigail. If he decides to lie about it, then his wife will die on the account of her being a witch. The decision he makes will affect him and everyone around him in either a good or a bad way. In attempting to tell the truth about the affair between Abigail and him, Abigail denies the whole story. He saves his wife by telling the court that she was not a witch, in the process killing himself. John's struggles with Elizabeth stem from the accusation of Elizabeth being witch and because of the affair between Abigail and himself. John forces himself to either tell the truth about his affair, to save his wife from sure death, or to lie about the affair and let his wife die. Joh
