The Tempest

Prospero's magical powers are a huge key to him being a good leader. His magical powers helped him take control of many situations before they became to chaotic. He has many powers over his surroundings, many more than any regular mortal has. However just because he has power that doesn't make him a good leader it is the fact that he uses his power wisely and in a smart manner throughout the whole play. Is he actually an ideal ruler though, he does combine his magic with power over the self.

Even though we hear the story of Prospero's eviction from Milan from him, the way in which he tells it inspires distrust. Prospero is overconfident, arrogant, and extremely unforgiving. The way in which Prospero ruled in Act 1 shows us that his rule is not always pleasant. Another sign of weakness was on the Island when he became friends with Caliban, brought him into his house and treated him like a brother and then was betrayed by him when he attempted to rape his sister.
