The Early America
1. New World civilization: The AztecsThe Aztecs were the second largest group after the Mayans in the central Mexico region. They were first nomadic people and originated in the Pacific Northwest. Later on the Aztecs migrated into central Mexico. By 1100 A.D. they had hundreds of tribes, but these were very poor tribes. One thing that the Aztecs were able in was their determination to be powerful. In fact these tribes were so determinant to rule the territory that by 1325 A.D., the Aztecs were the most powerful. They settled in the Valley of Mexico and built their capital in the only land available to them. The reason why this island was the only land available to the Aztecs was because the tribes that lived in the area were trying to get rid of them. The natives thought that the Aztecs would not bother them after they were driven out on to the islands of the lake. Little did they know that those same people would soon conquer them. The island was located in the Lake Texcoco, which the Aztecs connected to the shore by causeways. The name of the island capital was Tenochtitlan, which meant "Place where the gods meet". The city could have been considered to be a world wonder. It was eight square miles in size and inhabited about
The puritans were a faction of the reformation that was started by Martin Luther. They were not welcome to many places until England broke up with the Catholic Church in 1539. But, they were not welcomed in England for a long time either. James the First was not fond of the puritans and their stay in England came to an end in 1605 under Charles the First. Some went to other countries in Europe. Others however, left England and wound up in the New World. Further more the puritans were split into two factions that would both leave England. One of the factions was a separatist group that was a minority. It was more radical and left England in 1620 to the Americas. This faction established the colony of Plymouth. The second, a majority, of the factions was the congressionalist, which established the Massachusetts Bay colony. Both of these factions believed in reforming the English government and the Church of England. The only thing that the two factions did not agree on was the ! Most of the Aztec religion was based on their myths and legends. For example, the story of everyday war between the evil nights with its stars and the sun god Huitzilpochtli, who requires human hearts in order for the world not to end. Because of that requirement the Aztec religion is very fond of human sacrifice. In commemoration to one of their temples, the Aztecs sacrificed 40,000 people. They used their military in what was called the "Flower War" to collect the sacrificial victims. These victims were called the Xochimique, in other words, those who died in a god-like manner. The military collected the Xochimique from the near by villages around the lake. The Aztecs' own religious beliefs worked against them. The lake was boiling one day, lighting struck temples, and an appearance of a comet signified a prophecy where an exiled god would return to damn the Aztecs. This god was ironically described almost exactly as Cortez; a white man with a beard who would ride in strange houses over water and have strange animals with him. There was an incredible amount of money coming in to Europe from the Americas. This abundance if gold and silver caused inflation all around Europe, which led to the greatest economic boom in history. The Native American contributions start from the fact that it was their gold and silver that the Europeans robbed from them. Second and perhaps the greatest contribution was the number of the natives that worked themselves to death in the gold and silver mines. They were the main reason for the economic growth. Today there are still entire collections of their gold in museums and banks. Most of the Aztec food supply came from the nearby floating farms. These farms were created over the water for better irrigation system. They consisted of a box containing soil and usually held together by planted trees. The farmers would also dump human waste and the leftovers of sacrificial victims. To work on these farms the Aztecs used canoe type boats from which they did everything that had to be done to the farm. These farms just like the city itself are of brilliant design in that they never have to be watered, and there is always a place to get rid of garbage.
