A detailed Summary of Experiences
When my parents first came from India 30 years ago, my family shared a one-bedroom house with my aunt, uncle and their 3 children. Growing up living in a small house in Daly City, CA with nine other family members, I learned very early on in my life the necessity of working with others. I grew up in a value system of hard work, team effort, and cooperation.
Radiation Oncology is a field where collaboration with other specialties is very important for the patient's care. As a future radiation oncologist, I look forward to being a part of an integrated oncology team which will determine the best treatment options for a particular cancer patient. One avenue to provide better health care to all people is through research. I conducted an independent honors research thesis with Dr. Paola Timiras at U.C. Berkeley. The thesis dealt with the effectiveness of blood substitutes as cryoprotectants for preserving organs. During medical school I served as a research assistant for a presentation on the emerging technologies of custom corneal ablation. I am currently analyzing an unusual case of a Serratia marcescens endophthalmitis. I intend to submit the case report for publication with Dr. Jeffrey Caspar when the work is completed. I will also be conducting a clinical research project with Dr. Timmerman at Indiana University to determine the clinical outcomes of pediatric patients with germinomas treated with combined gamma knife and 3-dimensional external beam radiation.
