It started with the crops of soybean and maize, though when the first genetically engineered produce was sold, it was not labelled, so the consumers weren't to know what they were buying. In Australia, the use of chemicals throughout all aspects of farming has slowly exploited the soil and water quality. New ways are always needed with the growing populations and the outrageous need for growing food supplies. Genetically modified tomatoes or maize have the benefit of costing less money and also reducing the amount of pesticides used. In this way they could be better for the environment, using less water and fertilisers. Half the food that is currently grown is wasted due to damage in transport and pests; genetically modified foods would reduce this and therefore provide more food.
