pollution
There has been a great concern on earth's ailing condition especially when effects of man's inadvertent progression in the world of science and technology created a network of environmental problems. Thus the word 'pollution' comes to mind. In this essay, I would be looking at environmental pollution particularly, land and noise pollution, how are they evolved and what can be done to curb the problem from aggravating. I think it is very important for people to realize that different types of pollution such as water, air and soil are not inconsequential of one other. In fact, each of the parts of an environment - air, water, soil - depends upon the others and the flora and fauna within the environment. The relationships among all living and non-living things in an environment make up an ecological system, known as the ecosystem. All the ecosystems of the earth are interdependent. Thus, pollution that seems to affect only one part of the environment may also affect other parts. I would now look at the first of the two types of pollution that I would be concentrating on for this essay - land pollution. Land pollution is the degradation of the Earth's land through human misuse of the soil. Human influ
1) Balckbirch Staff, Beating Pollution, Henry Holt New York 1996 It is endearing to know that governments in many countries are taking serious action in curbing environmental pollution from aggravating. One of the most effective ways a government can control specific kinds of pollution is by banning the pollutant. For example, some governments have banned the use of the dangerous pesticide DDT for all except essential purposes. Farmers have found other less harmful pesticides to replace DDT. Governments have also regulated the disposal of solid and hazardous wastes through legislation. Imposing taxes and fines to companies for polluting is a sure way of encouraging companies to invest in pollution control equipment or to develop less polluting methods of operation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next, let us take a look at the second type of pollution that would be discussed in this essay - noise pollution. Sounds that are unwanted or unpleasant can be classed as noise. Noise does not dirty the air, water or land, but it can cause discomfort and hearing loss in human beings and other animals. There are mainly three types of noise pollution - transport noise, social noise and industrial noise. Today, scientists and farmers are developing ways to grow food that require less fertilizer and pesticides. Many farmers rotate their crops from year to year to reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. This rotation of maize, wheat and crops with legumes, such as soyabeans and alfalfa, helps replace the nitrogen lost from the soil. Crop rotation also helps control pests and plant diseases. Farmers can also use alternatives like releasing insects or bacteria that prey upon the pests, rather than spraying their crops with harmful pesticides. Scientists are also developing genetically engineered plants that are resistant to certain pests. There are however, specific guidelines that the government has developed, under the guidance of engineers, to estimate the number of people likely to be affected by an industrial noise. With this tool, engineers can plan factories so they will disturb as few people as possible in the surrounding area. Once again the benefits of a new factory have to be weighed against the disturbance to the local inhabitants, and if necessary, offer some compensation to those affected. Transport noise comes from three main causes. First and most familiar noise comes from the traffic on the road. Road noise mainly comes from cars, buses, lorries, vans and motorbikes, and each of these makes noise in a variety of different ways. Typically the things that bother people the most are engine starting, gear changing, car stereos, brakes and tyres. Half the responsibility of keeping their vehicle quiet lies with the driver wh
