Three dominant labor movements of the century were the American Federation of Labor (AFL) led by Samual Gompers, the Knights of Labor (K of L) led by Terence Powderly, and the International Workers of the World (IWW) led by William Haywood. All three were trying to establish improved ambient factors for working society through atypical approaches.The American Federation of Labor seemed to be the most dominant of the three unions. Samual Gompers theorized that the goal of this union would exist by building “a closed structure of largely white, male, skilled craftsmen,” (RTAP, p. 3). These men would work for a shorter working day, a more appropriate working environment, and more pay for its members. Gompers felt the union should “understand our industry as a whole,” (RTAP, p. 26). Gompers used a more subtle approach dealing with employers, a bill of proposals would be submitted that would either be accepted or denied.
