Got Weed? Why is Marijuana Illegal

Throughout history, drugs such as alcohol, nicotine, and marijuana have faced bitter battles with the law. The issues of addiction, dependence, and health have often been used as reasons against these drugs. Alcohol and nicotine are currently legal, but marijuana remains illegal for the majority of the United States population.

At one point in time all drugs were legal. That was before laws were passed against them. Slowly more and more laws were passed when people began to realize the harmful effects of some drugs. Soon all drugs were placed in one category - "bad". This led the Prohibition Era where society thought that a drug - free community was a safe community.

The issue of legalization of marijuana has no definite or easy answer as to what should be done and how the topic should be handled. This is a current topic that has been on the forefront for many years. Propaganda movies such as Reefer Madness were made to defame marijuana as early as the 1930s. Marijuana is commonly believed to remain illegal due to the bad reputation it received during this time.

Most controversial issues have two sides and a middle group, and the legalization of marijuana is one of them. The middle of this issue has two sections. Does marijuana have a medicinal purpose? Many say yes, marijuana has the ability to ease pain. This group states marijuana should be made legal to persons who meet a set of requirements. Today in some parts of California, marijuana is being prescribed by doctors to patients with certain types of cancer to ease pain. The other section is composed of the people who do not care. They do not partake in the use of marijuana and do not feel they are affected by anyone who does. Legal or illegal, marijuana simply makes no difference to them.

Throughout history, many events have led marijuana to receive a bad reputation. I feel marijuana has been the victim of misconceptions in the past. This leads to false facts and uniformed opinions. I will sort through the misconceptions history has made and find the truth behind them. That is my claim. I will examine the laws that have been proposed and passed by the state and
