The first part of Kate Chopin's story begins with an exposition, where the reader is introduced to the characters of Bobinot, and Bibi, the husband and son, respectively, of Claxita, the main character. In these first few paragraphs the reader is given a glimpse into the personalities of the father and son and it soon becomes apparent that, along with Claxita, the images of a perfect family are taking form. The authors use of the third person narrative allow us to witness Bobinot's loving feelings towards his wife which are displayed by the simple gesture of purchasing her favorite can of shrimps, making it very difficult to condone Claxita's betrayal during the next few paragraphs. With the passing of the storm, we also see the passing of the lovers' romantic moment. Both the tumultuous affair, and weather, have passed and life goes back to normal. Chopin accomplishes this by again having the reader visit the conversation of Claxita's husband and son. And, once again, they prove to be the loving family as they were first portrayed in the beginning. But this time we journey with them home where they are greeted by an overjoyed Claxita, who doesn't look upon them disapprovingly for the mud they tracked as husband and son expected. Instead, the reader shares in the love that Claxita obviously has for the two, and is able to see that the storm really has passed. Claxita and Alcee finished what may have been intended long ago, no one seems hurt by the storm's turbulence, and Chopin completed the story capturing both at once.

Chopin uses the storm for her story's setting in a descriptive and logical manner, making it easy for the reader to see and believe the connection between the two. But an extremely important detail that helps the story reach its high level of quality is the way the author expresses the character's speech.
