How significant has technology been in the development of human communications in the twentieth century?
°Technological change had placed communication in the front lines of a social revolution.± Our work, lives, and society have been changed by new technological innovations. Maybe the most affected area by new technologies is human communication area. And these technologies are called communication technologies, which offer increasing efficiency and connectivity for business, governments, and individuals. New communication technologies are being introduced at an incredible rate, and are affecting human communication with deep impact. Technological changes in the media are deeply interrelated to social change. Recent changes in communications technologies have been paralleled by social trends such as globalisation, commercialisation, and individualisation. To give a context to the new technological innovations of human communication, we will look at the mass communications media of the radio, television broadcasting, cable television, satellites, and finally computer communication technology. The focus of attention is the interaction of social, technical and commercial factors. In Chapter 1, firstly a topic is about radio broadcasting and then in Chapter 2, a subject of television broadc
The history of the development of the Internet is relatively short than radio and television. It just started to affect our way of communicating and lifestyle. Nobody knows exactly how Internet can be transformed into new form of communication technology or can be out-sided by new communication technology or can deeply impact our society more. We just have to wait and see. Television advertising became the national marketing tool. Political candidates quickly found it necessary to adjust their electoral campaign strategies to utilise television spot. As a result, the importance of political parties began to fade; television offered a more direct means of contact between candidates and their constituents. Hollywood handsome good looks became more important in electoral success than just where a candidate stood on political issues. Thus this tells us how the direct effects of television echoed out through American society. There are major and direct impacts of communication satellites on society. One of them is that we could use long distance telephone calls with much cheaper price. Other one is that it contributed to the rate of adoption of cable television by enhancing the channel selection. Also satellite communication facilitated national newspapers in the United States such as the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and USA today who transmit their pages by satellite to scattered printing plants around the country (Rogers, 1986). And finally it enabled the fast flow of international news, so that people could know what was happening in the world on same day. Today, cable systems have become the distributors of television signals to the majority of television household in the United Kingdom and United States. The cable industry is attempting to become the preeminent system for distribution of all human communication. Radio brought us a new kind of home entertainment for the first time, and its impact on human society was enormous. Radio brought a different experience that is the regimentation of time and brought the invention of television, which is undoubtedly giving us profound impact to the society politically, commercially, and socially. Even television caused bad impact on people such as imitations of crimes, encouraging smoking, showing unsuitable pictures to children, making people no to think, and so on. Cable television and satellite¯s technology is still developing so rapidly, and because of that, we can have many choices of entertainment at home and we, ourselves are globalised through those technologies. Internet and computer networking were a another revolution for society, and computer communication technology brought us new kinds of communications such as emailing, chatting, forming cyber society and so on.
