Un ethics of the WWF
In our world today, there are many ideas and institutions that carry with them a bad reputation. Many believe that these ideas and institutions have a problem with being morally right, i.e., accepted by society. Indeed, there are moral questions that must be answered, or at least looked at in dealing with some of these issues. Television programs are an overwhelming example. Because so many people watch television and due to its accessibility to virtually anyone, it could possibly be seen as one of the negative aspects towards morality in our society. One such institution that carries with it these questions is the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), a wrestling promotion that has virtually eliminated the notion of thought-provoking television and elevated unethical material available to society. Throughout this paper, I will show how the WWF is a controversial, adult-oriented, and in several cases, ethically unpure television programming. Before going into the many facets of the WWF's content, it must first be set what exactly ethics are and what certain guidelines should be followed in order for something to be considered ethical. A human action is just that, a certain action made by man. However, there must be certain elements present in order to be defined as a human act. For a human action, we need motion of the will, intellectual knowledge of the purpose of the act, and freedom (33). In general, the human act is the free, deliberate act, the act of man as man. We are guided as humans through these acts by our rational powers; our intellect and will. The intellect presents good or bad to the will, which decides what action we will take. The will, in turn, will either accept or reject the idea; this is called deliberation (32). If your will accepts, for instance, an idea as bad and you do it anyway, that is an evil. Ultimately, our human actions drive us towards our end. By looking at and examining our everyday lives, we can see that most every act we take part in is in some way leading to an end. This pattern will continue on in our lives until we reach our final end. These proximate ends, in turn, lead us to our ultimate end with God. End is the first in intention and second in execution. This means that in determining our end, we first think about what we want and what our intents are before we act on them. End is both the principle end and the terminus.
