Gender Equality: A Necessary Change for Society

"No person in the United States shall on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." According to Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, people of both genders should be given equal opportunities to participate in any educational activity. Laws have been made that support Title IX and it may be written into school handbooks, but is this law correctly put into effect everywhere? Unfortunately, the answer is no. There are still places that discriminate based on sex. This is a detriment to our society as a whole. Title IX should be duly implemented in all educational institutions to provide a sense of fairness and equality between both genders and to help the fight against discrimination.

Title IX mandates that schools cannot deny any student the right to participate in any educational program based on their gender. While many schools adhere to the official requirements of Title IX, women and girls are not necessarily granted the equality that Title IX is meant to provide. Why is that? Teachers and other administrative figures still hold

Most teachers believe that they treat students of both genders the same, but research shows that they actually do not. Teachers can often exhibit differential behaviors towards different genders without even realizing it. Studies have shown that males are asked higher order questions and that males are given more time to talk in class and are less reprimanded for doing so. Researchers have suggested that this causes women to have lower self-esteem and makes them less inclined to take risks. This needs to change. With Title IX and its implications properly followed, the classroom atmosphere can be an advantage for women in preparing them for the working world.

remnants of the pre-Title IX days. Although classes such as woodshop and auto mechanics are open to all students, there is still a strong lack of female participation in these classes. Disinterest and apathy may be reasons, but could fear of criticism and bias be others? Technically, the law is being followed-but not in the way that it is meant to be. This causes major gender equity issues that need to be addressed. These issues are highly related to the benefits of properly enforcing Title IX, and include gender bias in student/teac
