Hospice

According to Funk & Wagnalls Dictionary, hospice is a place of entertainment or shelter. Dictionary.com defines hospice as a program that provides palliative care and attends to the emotional, spiritual, social, and financial needs of terminally ill patients at an inpatient facility or at the patient's home. Webster's dictionary states that hospice is a facility or program designed to provide a caring environment for supplying the physical and emotional needs of the terminally ill. From these three definitions, I've concluded that hospice is care that a terminally ill person receives in a sheltering and caring environment.

Hospice care is a service that is offered in many communities. It is a multi-disciplinary team approach which provides support and care for patients who are terminally ill. In order to qualify for hospice care, the patients must have six months or less to live, and must be referred by a doctor.(ca.essortment.com)

The team of hospice workers consists of at least one social worker, nurses,

home health aides, respite care workers, an MD, and a pharmacist. (ca.essortment.)

services that are offered are medical nursing care, personal care, homemaker services, social work services, grief and other counseling services, volunteer assistance, spiritual care, case management, and family training in patients care.

All in all, hospice care is the treatment that people with terminal illnesses have when they are nearing death. Hospice care is meant to improve the quality of life, and not to hasten or slow death. It lets life take its coarse while trying to ensure the best for the patients and their families and friends.

Most insurance companies will cover hospice care. Some will only cover it for a certain amount of time, and some won't cover it at all. Certain companies require a 5$ or 5% co-pay on medication and/or respite care.(www.hospicenet.com)

Hospice does treat pain though it doesn't treat the disease. In order for the patients to be comfortable, sometimes certain pain killers are given. Those pain killers are only to ass
