A detailed Summary of Marraige

We here the word "family" everyday, but how often do we think where would we be without our family? How often do we think what exactly is a "family"? The definition is parents and their children, members of one household, and group of persons related by blood and marriage. These are the general things that we already know, but a family is a union between people to love, reproduce, and support.

These three concepts go hand and hand. We understand and know how important love is, but support is different. Certain issues you may be struggling to get through. Of course a friend or anymore can support you, but if you have no one to go to you can almost be sure that you can go to a family member. Reproduction has been separated not just from marriage, but from gender, age, and even sex itself.

The first essay presented was by Midge Dector, an author and critic of the Heritage Foundation. Dector called this essay "The Madness of American Family." Dector says the word "family", does not exist anymore and American families today make her mad. Dector criticizes our generation by saying we have lost our responsibilities.

She talks about how she look at men today and say they will never be a father or hus

Dector's essay in my opinion was outdated. Dector gives a definition of family, but I do not agree with this because I only live with my mother there is no father. By her definition my mother and I is not a family. She calls women staying at home and men working "ordinary life," which I do not agree with. This is considered the past or television land.

I also like the way Holcomb came up with all these questions that everyday families have to answer. I feel parents should do what is beneficial to their children and them next. Holcomb realizes this idea is only the truth and we must accept it. She lets us know by saying:

We can relate this issue to affirmative action because that was not only about race, but had a lot to do with gender. Just as African Americans was feeling inequality all women were feeling that way. Because of affirmative action the battlefield is balanced and today we can enjoy more women doctors, soldiers, and police. Dector is simply stuck in the past and needs to move with the time like Holcomb.

Who cares who do what in today's family as long as it gets done and no one is effected? This is the guideline that we need to go by to

To me both of these essays were well presented, but I definitely disagreed with some ideas and sort of agreed with many ideas. I want to start with Holcomb, I like her way of thinking because she realizes that certain laws have been changed so people are going to change for the better of themselves. She never agrees with this 100 percent, but she shows ways to adjust to time. I wanted her to go more in depth about "second shift." Because I feel raising children is a full-time job and if there is already two jobs among the family this will make three. Holcomb tells us "survey after survey shows that women still put in far more hours than men do at home (Holcomb, p.454)." This is true, but slowly, but surely it is changing and soon will be equal.

These two women think that both of their ideas are for the better of fam
