The central of this film is greed. This theme is portrayed through various techniques and scenarios, such as the quest for the confederate gold by Blondie, Angel Eyes and Tuco, as well as the hotel manager talking about how he'll be glad to get the Northerners in town for the money they'll bring in.

The entire notion of "death" is removed from the film, and left emotionless, expected and accepted. Graphic violence is omitted in the representation of death, and the audience is desensitized to the violence and images of death depicted.

The plot of this story is in reference to the 1863 "Reynolds Gang" and their exploits. After being released from Civil War prison camps for Confederate sympathizers, "The Reynolds Gang" began making robberies. Their loot was buried somewhere in the area of Handcart Gulch and Spanish Peaks in Colorado Territory, and after most of the gang had be dismembered, the location of the loot was whispered to an associate.

"The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" not only popularized and publicized what is now one of the most famous theme tunes on the plant, but also uses music to add extra tension and drama to various scenes


A minority of shots are used by Leone in this film, which is filled with many tracking shots and pans when the action scenes are concerned. When the actors are in focus, Leone most often uses medium-shots, and for scenery wide-shots are abundant.

A fundamental belief of most individuals is that the cowboys are the "good guys" who save towns in turmoil due to oppressors, but Leone portrays his cowboys as outlaws and thieves.
