(1994) The United Nations: International organization and world The United Nations consists of six principal organs, or functioning bodies. They are the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Trusteeship Council, International Court of Justice, and the Secretariat. Each of these performs specific tasks within the United Nations (Riggs, 1994: Baehr, 1992: Handbook). The Security Council has the power to make decisions which all member states must accept. It investigates situations that it deems may cause international friction, as well as disputes brought forth to the Security Council by any member state, the General Assembly, or the Secretary-General (Baehr, 1992: Riggs, 1994).
