Public Education in the United States, programs of instruction offered to children, adolescents, and adults in the United States through schools and colleges operated by state and local governments. Unlike the nationally regulated and financed education systems of many other industrialized societies, American public education is primarily the responsibility of the states and individual school districts.
The national system of formal education in the United States developed in the 19th century. It differed from education systems of other Western societies in three fundamental respects. First, Americans were more inclined to regard education as a solution to various social problems. Second, because they had this confidence in the power of education, Americans provided more years of schooling for a larger percentage of the population than other countries. Third, educational institutions were primarily governed by local authorities rather than by federal ones.
When I read Kozol’s “Savage Inequalities”, I had to change my mind completely. The real numbers provided in the book opened my eyes to the plethora of problems that are facing the US school districts today. The problems

In conclusion, the problems facing the US schools continue to increase but everyone can have a hope that these forces will not undermine the innocence and quest of learning each child has when he steps out the door to head for school.

The book points out racism as by far the most important role player in the education of children. There are probably two basic causes for "the origins and perpetuation of racism." One is that the European countries involved in the slave trade believed their own culture and color was the norm against which others should be measured, and the fact that Africans had a different culture and darker skin meant that they were not merely different but inferior. The second reason is that America needed a large and cheap labor force to exploit products like sugar and cotton — these exports made European colonialism very profitable. To justify and rationalize the continued importation and use of African labor, a belief system developed that declared Africans as property and unfit for anything but work. The two causes, of course, are interconnected, but they probably explain how racism started and in part why it continues today. Belief systems do not change quickly when they are so i!
