My best friend CiCi drove off of the road and into a ditch on her first real driving expedition. She was on her way back from a day at the beach during July of 1997 and did not yet have her real license - she was still driving off of the 90-day paper one. As soon as she got home, she called me and told me every detail about her "horribly embarrassing" experience from start to finish.
It was one of those days in mid-July so hot that there was only one thing to do whether or not one wanted to - go to the beach. CiCi, her sister BB, and their friend, Yan, who was visiting from Quebec for two weeks, loaded towels and beach chairs into the car and took off in the direction of the shore. They spent an enjoyable day there, hopping into the water when they got too hot on the sand and popping back out again when the water got too cold.

CiCi's first thought was that if she just turned the ignition maybe she could drive the car out of the ditch, whose sides were taller than she was. The car, however, did not start so they sat there until a policeman arrived; CiCi, filled with despair at what she had done. As she told him what had happened, her face grew red with embarrassment and again she noticed all the other drivers staring at her as though she were a caged monkey at the zoo. She knew what they were thinking, "there's one of those irresponsible teenaged drivers again...." She was angry with herself for having been so stupid - she should not have taken her eyes off the road. If only I could do it all over again, I would have kept my eyes on the road... Never had she wished for anything more in her life. She dreaded what speech her father would have in store for her; she dreaded having to use her savings to pay the damages for the car, and she dreaded how disappointed in her her mother would be. She never !
