Knowledge Translucency Through Postmodern Rejection
As we as a society strive to attack that endless void of unknown that is our lack of knowledge, we have been confronted by and fascinated with the notion of the indefinite, whether we have fully known so or not. As we seek to discover the unknown in the world, we find ourselves truly attacking what we do not know. We aggressively try to make what we consider "known" out of the world around us in an understanding that upon analysis is essentially vacant; for example, we have established a language for mathematics, but this is not truly the language of mathematics if there even exists such a principle. All our knowledge we have formed as a people over time, I submit, is wholly unsatisfactory in its misrepresentation. From a postmodern point of view-which more and more of our society's thoughts are tending to lean towards--, the knowledge we own is the meta-narrative that is to be rejected through an ever-adapting postmodern thought. Then I ask, why have we formed and still! strive to form this set of learning, though we know it cannot but partially represent what is truly our set universe in its foundation? The answer, although formed in the same manner as the rest of our knowledge, lies in the principle of that answer itse
Von Foerster, Heinz. Observing Systems. "On Constructing a Reality." Salinas, CA: unknown, 1984. In this novel, Lyotard forms the basic principles of postmodernism and how it affects cybernetic society today. From this I plan to reference the meta-narratives that he shows are to be refused by the postmodern era of thought. I will use this in collaboration with the fact that society is leaning toward postmodernism to explain why people reject their knowledge as being false, but stay creating it for the attempt at closeness to the central and underlying truth that is existence. sentation. This was further proven to me through quotes in an essay I found online at George Washington University: "Rather than believing that science describes reality, cyberneticians assert that each individual constructs a personal 'reality' which fits his or her experiences." (Umpleby) As the two title characters, Max and Neo, dug deeper into their worlds, they came closer and closer to the truth that the knowledge and essentially the make-up of their universe was flawed in its representative mockery and began to sense such. Each found, through an increasingly postmodern and cybernetic thought, a way to try and avoid the wrongs in their world and found the true path of what really existed. Each was handed a world of narrative that had to be rejected for its inaccuracy. "The mode of legitimation we are discussing, which reintroduces narrative as the validity of knowledge, can thus take two routes, depending on whether it represents the subject of the narrative as cog! >From this, Neo gains the bit of knowledge that there is actually fact behind the ideal in which he has been both fascinated with and plagued by in that this fabled Matrix is real and is becoming increasingly more tangible. This fascinates him in the same way that Max from Pi was fascinated with the 216 digit number. Whereas the "life"-number was Max's outlet into the truth of the world, in a similar way, the matrix is Neo's key to finding the truth to why he feels odd inside and that his world is incomplete. (To Neo) "You're here because you know something. What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but its there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad." - Morpheus (The Matrix)
