On October 16, 1934, one hundred thousand troops embarked on a six thousand mile journey from the southern part of China into the northern part. The journey took one year and many troops perished. It was crystal clear to Mao and his fellow comrades that they had to leave Jiangxi or face annihilation from the GMD forces. Moral among the troops was exceedingly low. In addition to the many astrocities that Chiang created was the twenty thousand troops that were left behind in Jiangxi and were killed. During the CCP resting period at Zunyi, Chiang was plotting to retake the towns that the CCP had occupied. However the GMD was not as powerful as they once were.
