Every generation has brought on changes to the world we live in. Each generation has challenged their parents in various different ways. For the people born between 1961 and 1981, we have been termed Generation X. So, are we really any different from previous generations? Have we not challenged our parents and their rules and expectations?
Some of the older generations judge Gen Xers based on our appearances, and so called misgivings. We enjoy challenging the norms of society by dressing in anything that will get a response from an elder. We like really sexy skintight clothing that leaves little to the imagination, pants that would fall off without the belt around our boxer clad butts, and we like ripped ratty clothes. Some of us dye our hair punky rainbow colors and have dozens of "holes" all over our bodies. We call this a form of self-expression. Generation Xers seem to have it all. They lack for nothing in the material sense. With Cable, stereos, CD, the Computer, and Internet at their disposal, what more could they ask for? We were born around the time that our mothers started working and divorces were no longer taboo. This change in the "family" structure changed the way we were raised. No longer was there a parent waiting at home for us. This started a downhill slide in the way our generation was raised. Instead of the constant presence of our parents, we were given babysitters and material possessions to help alleviate our parents' guilt. While the change in the workforce is a good thing allowing women to be somebody other a mother and a wife, it also compromised our upbringing. We no longer had a parental figure waiting at home. We watched as both our parents came home for work, wanting to relax before they dealt with the everyday things around the house. For the women, they had to fight to get help around the!
