Lake Innisfree
William Butler Yeats first studied art and then turned to poetry and playwrighting. Most of all during Yeats life he accomplished being "one of the most influential poets of the twentieth century." Yeats well-known poem, "Lake Isle of Innisfree," relates to people, who live in the city, yet long for the country. The theme is even if home is in the city, having roots in the country can make life more meaningful. The voice in the poem reveals his visions of building a cabin in the country so he can escape from the dull, gray city life. The poem is first person persona there is only one character, the narrator. This is known because the word "I" is said as often in the poem as there are stanzas, this indicates to the reader that there is only one character. One human is mentioned this emphasizes the solitude the speaker longs for in Innisfree. The peaceful sounds of birds and bees are heard in this imaginary setting. The narrator loves Innisfree because he can get away from his city routine and listen to nature as he watches this new type of life unfold. In Yeats poem he emphasizes a place away from the fast pace of life where people can escape to, not always literally, but in wishful thinking. The place the narrator describes, Innisfree has a symbolic meaning within itself. The inner word, "free" shows how this is a place where people can have peace and be free, where nature can take over the gray city life. The power of the word gray is a very good example of Yeats style also. The reader should take note that in the line, "While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray," that Yeats puts the noun before the adjective. He stresses the word gray while also making the word rhyme with day. This style Yeats decides to use emphasizes the dull city life and the escape to peaceful Innisfree. Throughout the poem, the narrator is speculating about how he is going to build a cabin in Innisfree. He longs for a place that will always be with him no matter where he is. Innisfree is a place where he can build a small cabin, plant crops, watch bees make their honey and listen to the water hit the shore. This imaginary place is a second home by the lake that the narrator can daydream about even when he is not there. The narrator is not only daydreaming but actually wants to someday build this cabin.
