violence in our schools

Violence in schools has become an increasing problem throughout the nation in the last few years. This has caused many problems among students, families, faculty, and residents that populate the surrounding area. However, there are a variety of possible ways that we can stop all this violence in our schools, a variety of laws have been passed, the most common of which is the "zero tolerance" law. Almost three-fourths of the United States teens are afraid of violent crime amongst their peers. Violence in schools has exploded into a huge problem in today's society. With all the people being killed or injured in schools the past couple of years by guns and other weapons, more people are getting more weapons to bring in to schools. Nearly one-third of all students, said they could easily obtain a handgun if they wanted to.

The cause of violence can be blamed on a variety of things, such as: drugs, gangs, and the unstable mentality of adolescents. A combination of these three things leads to violence in the schools. Just think of all the school shootings that have happened in the past few years. Most of these have been because the student could not handle the rejection of their classmates, and they took out their anger through vi

I find this extremely controversial because the student's creativity may have been mistaken for violent behavior. School officials defend their actions stating "that like the Columbine shooters, Brown had been teased." Does being teased in a large amount lead to violent behavior? Was his punishment too harsh for his crime? Did Brown even commit a crime? Maybe, but school officials cared not for the well being of the individual student, whose life may be ruined now. They, the school officials, asked no questions but proceeded with the punishment. Granted the student may have had violent tendencies, but this is where "zero tolerance" goes wrong, all it is concerned with is the act and not the mentality of those who committed the act and their reasons for doing it. It seems almost like the "don't tell, don't ask" policy that the armed forces have. We do not care about you as a person but only as the acts you commit show us. No questions are asked only the punishment is given.

Since schools have implemented metal detectors, scanners, video cameras, and security guards they have cut down the rate of having handguns in schools by over fifty percent. Security experts have reported that there is no evidence that a metal detector will solve the problem of violence in schools. What do metal detectors and other security measures do is offer a highly visible symbol to the community. Even with all these security measures implemented into schools there are still a variety of ways that weapons can be brought into the school; such as through side windows and side entrances if there are minimal or absent security devices at these doors.

An interesting article that appeared in the most recent Time magazine states,

olence. Drugs and gangs have also been on the increase in the past few years. More people are selling and buying drugs, and getting involved with the gang mentality. This increase in money and gang in
