Cable modems Take Advantage of existing infrastructure

Cable modems were first introduced in 1995 but the technology didn't pick up until 1998 and 1999 when television cable companies began installing the necessary equipment to support Internet access. The article described a cable modem as a two-way communication device that uses broadband networks of your local cable company. The comparison from Cable modems to the original dial-up modems is practically laughable. The cable company must install a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) which allows people to connect to the internet when it receives a signal from an Internet Service Provider. By the end of February 2000 there were more than 2.7 million cable modem users. About 2 million of those users were in the United States and that number is expected to rise to 15.9 million by 2003. With all the new customers using the phenomenal speed of a cable modem it's easy to see that people are looking for quicker means to access the Internet. And the cable modems offer people just that.
