Russia's luck had run out and the country started to have bad harvests. For example in 1978, the wheat harvest was up to 230 million tons but it drastically fell to about 155 million tons in 1981. Reactionary elements began to appear. Anti-Semitic groups began to emerge, especially in Leningrad because of glasnost. Chernobyl's' nuclear power plant explodes on April 25, 1986. The explosion sent radiation in to the atmosphere causing death, radiation poisoning, and birth defects to thousands of people not only Russians. Gorbachev helped send Russian aid to the area.
