Pygmalion
Henry Higgins comes across as an obnoxious and arrogant person in George Bernard Shaw's play, "Pygmalion." He is one of the more peculiar characters that I have read about. He treats everyone else in the play in his own particular way. His relationship with Eliza Doolittle is by far the most interesting throughout the play. Higgins treats Eliza as though she wasn't a person at all. In Act IV of the play, Higgins and Eliza are talking about how the bet was over and what their futures were going to be, now that his experiment was over. Higgins shows some of his lack of caring by saying "How the devil do I know whats to become of you? What does it matter what becomes of you?" Eliza seems to be truly hurt by this remark. I find this to be an extremely rude and viscous thing to say. Higgins is a grown man and he should have respect for other people's feelings, especially Eliza. Higgins relationship with his mother is also kind of awkward and unique at the same time. He treats her in different ways throughout his conversations with her. He acts like a little kid in some ways. He likes to shock her with some of his mind games. He got quite a rise out of her in Act III when he was talking to her about a woman, Eliza, w
Higgins also treats Mrs. Pearce almost as though she were a slave to him. He never asks her to do something nicely. He always gives her direct orders. Some people may think this rude and I have to agree with those people. Mrs. Pearce doesn't show much emotion about the way in which she is treated, but when Higgins is rude towards Eliza, she steps in and tells him that he is out of line. In Act II Mrs. Pearce reacts to a comment made by Higgins towards Eliza, "Mr. Higgins you're tempting this girl. It's not right. She should think of the future." I feel that Mrs. Pearce should react as strongly when Higgins gives her his list of demands, and make him ask her nicely to do what he wants. She is providing him with a service, and doesn't deserve all the disrespect that he shows towards her. Throughout the play, Higgins shows certain qualities that remind me of myself. I feel that he is hiding his true feelings about Eliza. I think that he wanted to be with her at the end of the play, even though he tries to play it off like he doesn't care in the slightest what she thinks of him, or where she ends up after his experiment has concluded. This reminded me a great deal of a relationship that I had with a girl last year. I met the girl, Elysa in the dorms, and we talked to each other all the time. We talked about everything, and de
