Poythress, Vern S., The Shadow of Christ in the Law of Moses, (Presbyterian and Reformed Publishing, Phillipsburg, N.J., 1991).BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL INFORMATION Dr. Vern Sheridan Poythress, the author of The Shadow of Christ in the Law of Moses, has accomplished many feats throughout his life. To begin, Dr. Poythress was born in 1941 and is currently married to Diane Poythress. Along with his wife, Dr. Poythress has raised two children, Ransom and Justin. All throughout his life, Dr. Poythress has taken the Word of God and his studies extremely serious. As one person wrote, "Dr. Poythress is a professor of New Testament Interpretation. He is a brilliant scholar and an effective communicator. His lectures are characterized by profound scholarship and sincere personal warmth. He has spent years of careful scholarship studying the New Testament and especially the book of Revelation." In speaking of his vigorous studies, Dr. Poythress has received six degrees from some of the most prestigious schools of higher learning in the world. First, he received a Bachelor of Science from the California Institute of Technology in 1966. From there, Dr. Poythress went on to receive his Ph. D. from the h
In the next section, he goes on to speak of the challenge of the Old Testament. He begins with the story of the two men walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus. They were sad because their master had died. Then, once Jesus had revealed to them that He had risen from the dead, they realized that their hearts were burning with passion while he talked to them. Dr. Poythress claims that this is when the Old Testament scriptures had been opened up to them. He then goes on to tell that in the Old Testament, we find a focus on Jesus Christ, His death, and His resurrection. Next, he goes on to tell of the separations of the tabernacle and the multifaceted character of tabernacle symbolism. He explains how the Most Holy Place was separated from the Holy Place just as we can never enter the throne room of God. Then, he shows how the Holy place was separated with a curtain from the courtyard. This is compared to how we cannot climb our way up to visibly see Heaven. The next sub-heading was practical lessons from the tabernacle that we can learn. These lessons would include: it's symbolic connection to Heaven, even though the whole universe is God's house He is concerned with our day-to-day circumstances, the Israelites had unique privileges, it symbolized Eden, it symbolized the people of God corporately, it symbolized the people of God individually, it pointed forward to the new Jerusalem, and it symbolized God Himself. Chapter Five, General Principals for God's Dwelling with Human Beings: Prefiguring Union with Christ, deals with the interaction of the tabernacle, sacrifices, and priests. The interaction of all three is vital for if even one of these three items were missing, then the other two would become worthless. First, the tabernacle must have sacrifices and priest in order to be of any use. Next, the sacrifices must be presented in the sight of the Lord, the tabernacle, in order to be valid. Finally, the priests, in order to fulfill their calling, were to be clean and could not do so if there were no sacrifices. In the last section of this chapter, Dr. Poythress deals with the issue of the way of God with His people. He claims that the dwelling of God among His people was fulfilled with the coming of Christ. First, Christ expressed the personal presence of God. Next, Christ expressed the order of God, in that He has a perfect pattern of righteousness. Finally, Christ showed! . As anyone can see, Dr. Poythress is dedicated to the Word of God and has a passion about correcting the error of what many people think true Christianity is. He is not only dedicated to the correct interpretation of the Word of God, but also correct teaching of the Word. EXPLANATION OF THE PURPOSE, THESIS, AND STRUCTURE The next chapter, fourteen, was entitled Deterrence and Rehabilitation. To start off, Dr. Poythress speaks of the use if the general principal of equivalence. He claims that we can reach the same conclusions by not only taking the Old Testament alongside the New Testament. Yet, we can take alternative routes and all the roads lead to the same place. That place being the example of the purifying power of Jesus Christ. Next, he goes on to tell of the role of deterrence and rehabilitation. He makes the claim that the greatest example of deterrence is the destruction of sin through the crucifixion of Christ. The ultimate form of rehabilitation is in the new life we receive in Christ. Dr. Poythress concludes this chapter with a thought of the deterrence and rehabilitation. He claims that you can never stop a criminal from being a criminal. However, the best form of rehabilitation is found in the story of the Messiah of the New Testament. The final chapter, Fulfillment of the Law in the Gospel according to Matthew, is where Dr. Poythress wraps of his thesis and proves that the New Testament is the sequel to the Old Testament. Matthew, and the other gospels for that matter, all point out the issue t
