Observation Sweet Rewards

A lone cup sat abandoned on a post outside the Albertsons library on the BSU campus. The cup is unaware that it is being watched. In the distance, on the far edge of the lawn sits a squirrel. The squirrel has no idea what Moxie Java stands for, nor does he care. There was only one thing on that modern day squirrels mind, I have seen this kind of cup before and I know what it has to offer. I can see from where I am sitting that this squirrel has a mission. A mission to search and discover what fortunes people have left for him.

I can hear the squirrel chatter, as if to ask me if the coast is clear. Maybe he wants to know if I am going to eat him. I mumble to myself nobody is going to hurt you little guy, as if the squirrel can hear or understand me. He stands on his hind legs scanning the area to see if anyone or anything threatening is in view. Taking a few leaps forward to get a better look, he notices a student on a bicycle approaching. As the hum of the bicycles tires grow louder, he becomes more nervous. Closer and closer the bicycle approaches, becoming unbearably nerve racking. I see the squirrel unable to control his fear, bound towards a tree closer to the cup. He reminds me of a wide eyed child running a

He wonders why anything would want to smell like soap, deodorant, and cologne instead of smelling like bark and wet grass. What curious habits people have compared to him, even if they share a common affection for coffee. I can see that it does not matter what the smell is because the squirrels beady eyes are obviously focused on his task.

Class break has come, and no one but myself notices the squirrel. Although the squirrel seems to notice everyone. Every person that he sees is a potential threat to his goal. I see him start to look around nervously. Talking and the sound of movement overpower the ever-present sound of the river. Again the squirrel is on the move, bouncing from limb to limb. The same way I feel when I have had to much caffeine. No longer does the squirrel move silently, as the branches shake noisily under his feet. He is an overactive fur ball of energy waiting for a chance to strike.

For a long time the squirrel sits and glares at me. As if to punish me like a disapproving parent. After sulking for a few minutes, the attention of the squirrel drifts back towards the cup. The mission plan again ma
