Throughout the history of social movements, there have been great differences in opinion about the direction that each respective movement should take. This difference in opinion usually occurs between the liberal, and more radical factions of the movement. While in many cases a division of dogma such as this results in negative consequences for the movement, it is usually the result of a natural evolution of ideology among members of the movement. In some instances, this division actually helps to further the movement in ways that none of the members could have anticipated. Two examples of movements deeply affected by the liberal-radical split are the Black Movement, and the Environmental movement. Both movements, which began in the early sixties, as primarily grassroots movements, expanded over a period of a few years and divided among ideological lines in the center of media attention. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Out of the frustration brought by the movements loss of momentum during the seventies, and more specifically with the liberal environmental lobby's inability to protect a large amount of federal land from being developed, David Foreman, an ex-member of the Wilderness Society formed a radical environmental group called Earth First! Foreman was inspired by the 1976 book The Monkey Wrench Gang, to peruse a radical tactic of "Eco-sabotage", or the distorting of machinery involved in environmental distruction. The media coverage of these extreme radicals helped to give more legitimacy to the more moderate organizations. Another movement that experienced a split between the liberal and radical factions was the environmental movement. Developed in the early eixties as a synthesis of post-WWII conservationism, and budding theories on sustainable living, the environmental movement became a powerful force on politicians, and individuals alike by the late sixties. While experiencing great success during the sixties, the movement was able to encourage congress to pass several bills protecting the environment. At the time, the crowning achievement of the movement was the creation of "Earth Day". First organized in 1970, Earth Day was seen as a victory for environmentally minded people everywhere.
