Ben Hur’s Struggle with Faith: a Theme

The movie Ben Hur is about Judah Ben Hur, an aristocratic Jew living during the Augustan age and the time of Jesus when Jud was a Roman province. The Jews had historically always been oppressed and ruled over and during this age, were planning revolts against the Romans so they could finally be independent. Ben Hur was not only an aristocrat, but also a religious leader who was close with his people as well as his god. When he was taken from his home as a political punishment by the Romans (particularly Mesallah, his nemesis), he kept his faith throughout a grueling four years as a slave oarsman for the Roman fleet. But when he was finally freed from that punishment, he decided that it was not his god who helped him through it, but it was his own doing plus by chance events that he was freed. s a reward for saving a Roman Leader’s life, while completely ignoring his faith. But by the end of the movie, Ben Hur has a restored faith !

Judah Ben Hur upheld his faith through the hardest of times, but once they were over, abandoned it. He was always optimistic about being saved by God from his labor and being redeemed for his hardships. Even while he was being forced to work extremely hard as an oarsman of a battleship, he used his faith in God as his strength to keep working to avoid further punishment, no matter how tired he was. Before he was put there, he was made to march through the desert along with other prisoners and kept walking despite his dehydration. He regained hope after being fed by Jesus, taking that act as help from God.
