Us Sanctions on Iraqi
IRAQ VS. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA:HOW MUCH LONGER WILL INNOCENT PEOPLE CONTINUE TO DIE UNTIL SANCTIONS ARE LIFTED? In the year 1990 the Middle East was in a tense position after the attack of Kuwait by its Iraq neighbours and its' President Sadaam Hussein. This was only to beginning of what turned out to be a war, which many were hurt, and many countries felt the effect as a result of this war. The Gulf War did not start until 1991 but tension was building between the world and Iraq. Iraq was left out on its own to fend off the world. This war turned out to be Sadaam vs. the world. Countries felt threatened by the mere existence of this man Sadaam considering him a menace to society. Sadaam proved over again that he was after land first invading Iran and then taking over Kuwait. When Sadaam took over Kuwait he was after the Kuwaiti Oil. Iraq wanted to be the second largest to Saudi Arabia in Oil production and only could achieve this by taking over Kuwaiti soil. The Gulf War turned out to be a hard fought war led by the United States of America and George Bush's Administration. The Bush Administration was determined not let Kuwait be walked over by a stronger country in Iraq. This administration was not entering into thi
Let the world come to the realization that they have committed a mistake and have committed genocide against innocent people as a result of one man Sadaam. One might ask where has genocide been committed but by looking at people dying for no reason but their nationality and it becomes apparent why genocide. Innocent lives should not pay the price in these political games. The blame now does not rest on the shoulders of President Hussein but rather on those who have continued this oppression on the Iraqi people. The United Nations was instilled to unify countries yet it has torn apart Iraq and has condoned many human rights violations against Iraqis and it has reached a point where enough is enough! Iraq did respond to these sanctions and committed to returning all seized Kuwaiti property and return all the prisoners of war. These sanctions damaged Iraq's already damaged infrastructure estimated at $30 billion (US). Sanctions caused severe discomfort to the Iraqi people. Upraises and revolutions did not happen in Iraq as hoped by the Americans and Sadaam remained in power. It did achieve one important thing and that was it immoblized Iraq's production of weapons. Amongst the countries to abstain from these sanctions were Russia and France. The UNSCOM approved the idea of potential embargoes against Iraq yet had to offer assistance to the countries, which were involved in great import-export relationships with Iraq. This unilateral movement to stand firm against Iraq has gone on for to long. It has been over nine years and it is beginning to become tougher and tougher for the United States to keep countries from breaking this embargo. Many countries are beginning to feel that too much damage has been done and have arrived at the conclusion that it is time to raise these sanctions. Iraq was not always co-operative with the weapons inspections sent by United Nations Security Council. This stand-off between Iraqi President Hussein and the United Nations over weapons inspections helped only Sadaam. The longer he played cat-and-mouse with inspectors, the stronger he became. This war caused fear and concern for all the countries surrounding Iraq but that threat was felt most in Israel. Iraq's invasion of Kuwait forced Israel, primarily, and the US, secondly, as Israel's guarantor, to face up to the possibility that there was, for the first time since 1948, a genuine threat to Israel's survival. This threat was served as a result of the geographical significance of Iraq towards Israel. This war was also known as the Desert Storm. Desert Storm was not only about Iraq since it affected many countries around Iraq. Some have suggested that Israel felt threatened as a result of the power which Sadaam and Iraq had gained and that is what brought the United States into the war. Sanctions have added economic hardship to the already extreme perils of life in an Iraq ruled by Sadaam. The people of Iraq have not fostered a revolution. They have only given Iraqis reason to hate the foreign causes of their deprivation. Sanctions always produce screwy outcomes. They begin, after all, by making the wrong people suffer. The U.N. deserves credit for sensing the moral void of sanctions based strategies, even if it chose an incorrect way to deal with the breach as it applies to Iraq and thus became part of the problem.
