Elizabeth Bennet

A detailed Summary of Elizabeth Bennet

"They are all silly and ignorant like other girls, but Lizzy has something more of quickness than her sisters." Mr Bennet favours Elizabeth out of his five daughters much to the annoyance of Mrs Bennet. She is a pretty, witty and accomplished girl being the heroine throughout the novel. She represents the word 'prejudice' in the title, this being one of her few, but major flaws.

Elizabeth, to the annoyance of her mother is a determined young woman. She is determined to fall in live and marry for all the right reasons. She did not conform to rules of society that said she had to marry for a comfortable life, and that she had to achieve a social status and financial security. To be a spinster, dependant on others was a fate of nightmarish proportions. Elizabeth did not believe in this way of life nor did she believe in social status. She wanted to marry a man who she loved, not the richest one to pass her way. There was strong competition between mothers with their marriageable daughters. "A young man of large fortune" moved into Netherfield and it was Mrs Bennet's intentions that he would fall in love with one of her daughters. As she tries to convince Mr Bennet that he should arrange to visit him as soon as he comes. The social

Elizabeth grows to learn a valuable lesson that she can be as guilty of pride as well as Darcy. She learns from Darcy as he too learns from her. 'She grew absolutely ashamed of herself' in the fact that she used to pride herself on her judgement of friends and enemies. She knew that she now would have to re-assess the friends gained and the friends lost, especially Darcy.

In a conversation with Darcy she asks him if he ever allows himself 'to be blinded by prejudice.' This is ironic, as she is the one who is guilty of prejudice. Even when Miss Bingley spoke to her about Wickham Elizabeth is entirely mistaken in her response, when Miss Bingley, in fact is telling the truth about Wickham. "I see nothing in it but your own wilful ignorance and the malice of Mr. Darcy."

Elizabeth prides herself on judging people and thinks that she can see people for what they are. Her judgement, however good, does fail her on different occasions. She soon falls for the new arrival to the district, Wickham who is a charming and 'universally liked' young army officer. She cannot see him for what he really is. Although she knows nothing about him, she is taken in by his flattering behaviour toward her and believes the awful stories he tells her about Darcy. He told her that Darcy has deliberately and spitefully ruined his prospects. Elizabeth is too eager to have her judgement of Darcy's character confirmed to exercise caution. She is deceived by the superficial charm that Wickham displays. "I can never defy or expose him." Elizabeth blinds herself to the fact that Wickham is actually doing what he says he could never do. She honours him for 'such feelings, and thought him handsomer than ever as he expressed them. Elizabeth likes Wickham, maybe because he is no!
