Miss Brill

"What has happened to me?" A question asked in the story "Miss Brill". The reader can't help but feel a bit taken in by the charm of Miss Brill. She has a way of talking that almost leads the reader to believe she is dressing for a night out with friends. But, to the readers surprise, she isn't! Miss Brill is a story of an old woman who has gone so far out of the loop of society that she no longer realizes she is not in it. Many elderly people have a set of rituals to be performed regularly. But Miss Brill's activities are far from ordinary. She has an interesting way of diagnosing the people she mentally interacts with. By mentally interacting she simply does not talk to them she just feels as though she is a part of the conversation she witnesses. Miss Brill's ability to stray so far from reality allows the reader to feel many interesting points such as maybe she isn't crazy at all, what caused her to become this way, or is the reader mea


In the story Miss Brill comments quite a lot on the other characters. Maybe the other characters were actually the focus of the story and Miss Brill was the narrator. Many times in stories such as "Huck Finn" and "Stand by Me" the narrator interacts with the other characters and is even sometimes overshadowed by the other people in story. Quite possibly the writer of this story could have been trying to get the reader to acknowledge the odd people she sees by the way Miss Brill reacts to them. An by placing an odd woman such as Miss Brill it allows the reader to see how one would react to such an adverse situation.

Often times in stories characters act strangely and when a reader continues on in the story he or she finds that the character has had a life changing incident occur in the past.
