The story takes place at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Magic. It is a boarding school, especially built for children with magical powers. It is a big castle located deep within a forest to hide it from muggles (those who have no magic blood). At Hogwarts classes range from herbology, to potions, to defense against the dark arts. The students there are members of one of the four houses, Gryffindor (Harry's house), Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. The students are put in houses based on their strengths. Harry is placed in Gryffindor because of his courage. Those placed in the Sltyherin house often drift to the Dark Arts of magic.

The story begins in the summer when Harry is living with his muggle relatives who treat him very bad. After using his magic, Harry is locked in his room. Things are looking bad for Harry, especially when a small house elf comes to tell him not o return to Hogwarts. He is eventually rescued by his friend Ron, and Ron's two older brothers. They spen

The story takes a turn when Harry finds a diary in the girl's bathroom. The diary belongs to Tom Riddle, a student who attended Hogwarts 50 years before. Tom explains to Harry that the Chamber had been opened once before, and shows Harry an account of what happened. Through the diary Harry sees that the Chamber was opened by Hagrid and that Tom Riddle had stopped him. Harry knew that Hagrid had been expelled from the school before he was the gamekeeper and they all soon believed he was responsible for the opening.

One day at school Harry hears voices whispering actions of killing. It leads to an attack on the caretaker of the schools cat, with a message stating that the chamber of secrets has been opened. Harry and his friends Ron and Hermoine learn that cat is not dead, but petrified, and search for the meaning of the chamber of secrets, but to no avail.

Quiditch is the sport played by wizards or warlocks in which two teams fly around on brroms trying to catch magical balls. Harry is the Gryfindor sneaker, the most important position on the field.

At Hogwarts, Harry and Ron are reunited with their good friend Hermoine Granger. They also interact with Hagrid, the giant loving groundskeeper of Hogwarts and Draco Malfoy, Harry's enemy. The school year begins very normally for the children. Harry studies hard, but devotes most of his time to training for the upcoming Quidditch.

Back at school the attacks continue, including Hermoine, Harry's friend. They all seem to happen to "mudbloods," or those who do not have pure magic blood. This was evident in the late Salazar Slytherins thoughts, and all those who have some muggle heritage are frightened. Harry realizes that the monster is a snake, called a basilisk, and that he only hears it because of his parseltongue. The basilisk has the ability to kill all who look at it and since everyone had only seen it in a reflection they were only petrified. In the following days, Ron's sister Ginny is taken by the monster into the Chamber of Secrets. Harry and Ron find out that the monster travels in the pipes and find the entrance in the girls bathroom.

Harry Potter was a very well written story. It contained all elements necessary for an exciting and well-written novel. It breeches a gap between age groups, as it can be enjoyed by anyone. In the future, I look forward to reading more into the Harry Potter series
