Hills like white elephants
A detailed Summary of Hills like white elephants
Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills like White Elephants” (reprinted in Thomas R. Arp,
Perrines Literature, Sound, and Sense, 7th ed. [1972] 170) uses setting to create a brilliant
story. The story takes place at a train station, where the couple is waiting for the train and
discussing what is going over some drinks. It is thought that they are discussing whether
or not the women should have an abortion. They are at a table in the shade under the hot
sun, a dry barren land to one side and a green fertile land to the other.
