Although Athens and Sparta were very different in many respects they were also similar in many ways. Athenian and Spartan societies both relied on slaves for manual labor in the fields and in the construction of temples, both societies believed that in order to develop themselves fully they could not be bothered by such things, Athenians believed that time taken away from the study of philosophy and mathematics was detrimental to the development of ones self. There are a few reasons for the differences in the way the Athenians handled their affairs and the way the Spartans handled theirs. Early on the Spartan and Athenian city-states were overpopulated, the way that each society decided to handle the overpopulation is a direct cause of why the two societies developed differently. Athenians used thought to try and solve their problem. They decided that Athens would be a free city-state where people were allowed to come and go as they pleased using Athens many ports. This open armed policy allowed Athens to grow culturally and intellectually by allowing citizens to voice their opinion.
