In Faulkner's, As I Lay Dying, Addie Bundren passes away by page 48 of the novel. Although we have not heard from her character directly, we are aware of certain characteristics that pertain to her. Through the narrations of characters such as Darl, Cora, Jewel, Peabody, and Tull we are aware of what kind of woman she appears to be, her values in life, and the type and level of relationships she had with her husband and with her children.
In Darl's narration you get a first glimpse into one of Addie's values. "Addie Bundren could want a better on, a better box to lie in. It will give her confidence and comfort" (Faulkner 5)
