comparasion paper
The theme that I have chosen is that of talking animals. The first story, "The Three Hares", tells the tale of a father rabbit instructing his three young children that it is time to move off onto their own. The first decided that he was sick of living in a dark den and made his home out of leaves, moss, sticks, brushwood and tufts of bushes. When he grew hungry he wandered into the field and was approached by a wolf, who chased him back to his house. Since it was made of easily destructed materials, the wolf had no trouble breaking it down and eating the rabbit. The second rabbit felt that he too was sick of living in a dark den and so made his house from the roots of a tree. When he came across the fox and was also chased back to his house, the fox was again able to easily break through the material and eat the rabbit. The third rabbit dhimself a den, that was deeper and longer than his father's and this time when the fox chased aftug er him, he was unable to get to t!he rabbit and he lived safely forever. The second story, "The Monkey and the Crocodile" is a tale of wits. The crocodile's mother told him to fetch her a monkey's heart. To trick the monkey into the water he tells him that he could ride across the wate
and, he climbs back up into the tree and refuses to come down. Each of these shows a recognizable motif. In the first it is watching and learning, in that the third rabbit saw his brothers try new houses and fail with them and so deciding to follow his fathers advice he lived safely. In the second story, the motif was the trickster gets tricked. This is obvious as the supposed trickster, the crocodile foolishly falls for the monkey's absurd story and takes him back to the land. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I would recommend both of these stories from preschool up through sixth or seventh grade. At the preschool age the kids will see it as more of a fun read and may not be able to pick out the moral just yet. At the middle school level however, the students should be at an age where they are able to detect morals and meanings of stories quite well. As for the ages in between, the reader might be able to do it alone or require assistance, but all can in some form learn from and enjoy these stories. figure things out for themselves and sometimes that means learning it the hard way. ible and easily tricked, however he is trying to be a trickster. In "The Three Hares", the first two rabbits think that they know better than their father and fail to heed his advice on making a den. Because of this they are outsmarted by a fox and eaten. At first he tried to trick them into conversing with him by saying he would not hurt them, and when they did not believe him, he chased the rabbits back to their houses and was able to break through their branches an
